Ramzan fasting: Volunteers invited for research study

May 3, 2019

Mysuru: The Department of Studies in Food Science and Nutrition, University of Mysore, will be undertaking a research study on the impact of fasting during Ramadhan (Ramzan) on metabolic effects,  body composition and other-related parameters.

Dr. Asna Urooj, Chairperson of the Department, said that healthy volunteers between 18 years and 65 years can participate in the study. The participants will have to provide blood samples before the start of the fasting and after its conclusion to arrive at the changes in various parameters such as lipid profile, blood glucose, anti-oxidants, liver and renal function etc.

Muslims, who fast during the month of Ramadhan, abstain from eating or drinking anything for around thirteen-and-half-hours every day. They finish their early morning meal called Sehr by 4.50 am and break the fast (Iftar) around 6.30 pm – 6.40 pm every day.

“It is a good opportunity to study the impact of fasting on metabolism and body composition. Limited studies have been conducted in India in this aspect. So, we have planned to conduct the  study,” said Dr. Urooj adding that such an attempt will help to scientifically validate religious practices and throw more light on its health benefits.

The month of Ramadhan is expected to start from May 7, but the exact date will be known only after the sighting of the crescent. Hence, the Department of Studies in Food Science and Nutrition has made arrangements for an assessment before the commencement of Ramadhan on May 4 (Saturday) and May 6 (Monday) between 10 am and 1 pm.  Volunteers interested in participating in the study can contact Mob: 94484-89334 or 72043-00866.
