Bengaluru: After visiting the Chamundi Hill and assessing the damages caused by a couple of landslides due to incessant rains and after obtaining an estimate from his Department, Public Works (PWD) Minister C.C. Patil has said that Rs. 9.96 crore would be needed to restore the damaged portions.
Making an announcement in the Legislature session at Belagavi, the Minister said that vast portions of land had collapsed on the Hill thrice. “It has come to the notice of the Government and it has not appointed any exclusive technical committee to assess the damages. But scientists from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have submitted a report after studying the pattern of the landslides, soil and other factors,” he said.
The IISc scientists have suggested ‘reinforced earth steepened slope structure wall’ technique to restore the damaged areas. “The scientists studied the landslide pattern and took samples from faults, joints and bedding surfaces, which are contact points between rock and soil and contribute to landslides. The estimated cost of the project would be Rs. 9.96 crore. The State Government will initiate the repair works as suggested by the scientists,” Patil said.
