March 22, 2017

Marking International Women’s Day, Rural Literacy and Health Programme (RLHP) in association with Dhwani Mahila Okkuta had organised a function at Town Hall here this morning.

The programme featured lectures on women’s education and protection of rights, followed by mime, dance-drama and other cultural programmes including dollu kunitha and kamsale by rural women and slum-dwellers.

Inaugurating the event, Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep pointed out that women in rural areas faced many problems.

He opined that a change in mental set up is vital before implementing radical changes in society. He observed that many women were being harassed within the family which should be attended first.

The DC commended women achievers in different spheres and advised rural women to be aware of their legal rights. He regretted that women were being harassed by women themselves citing the example of dowry harassment.

Radha, Deputy Director of the Department of Women and Child Welfare, presided. Women’s activist Meera Nayak spoke on ‘Women’s Education and Protection.’

RLHP Director Saraswathi, Dhwani Mahila Okkuta President Shaheen Taj, Mysuru Slum Dwellers Forum President Anand and others were present on the occasion.
