Senior citizens warned of self-medication

Mysore/Mysuru: As part of its ongoing health talk series, the Elder Citizens Council in Jayalakshmipuram recently organised a lecture-cum-interaction on the adverse effects of misuse of medications at its Saraswathi Samudaya Bhavan Hall.

Dr. H.N. Gopalakrishna, a retired Professor of Pharmacology from Kasthurba Medical College and AJ Institute of Medical College, Mangaluru, was the resource person. He has authored 45 research papers in national and international journals.

He elucidated the various adverse effects experienced by senior citizens due to improper medication administration. He stressed the importance of adhering to prescribed doses, methods of consumption and timing, emphasising that patients must provide accurate information about their health conditions during consultations to enable doctors to prescribe suitable medications effectively.

He cautioned against self- medication and improper consumption practices, highlighting the potential risks involved, including adverse drug reactions.

Dr. Gopalakrishna underscored the importance of strict adherence to medical discipline for experiencing the true benefits of medication. Audience interactions with the speaker yielded valuable insights for promoting healthy living.
