Signal jumping near AIISH Circle

May 18, 2018

Sir,

Deliberate signal jumping and not following the lane discipline, that is, driving on the other side of the road divider, especially at the Circles, has become quite common in city. In a recent incident, I have noticed a narrow escape from a head-on collision between a scooter and bike near AIISH Circle on Bogadi road (see pic).

A rider of a scooter while coming from the Bogadi side was in a hurry to cross the Circle and violated the lane discipline by riding on the other side of the divider. At the same time, a helmetless biker coming from SJCE side violated red signal  (red signal indicating to wait one more second for Bogadi side traffic to move) and took a right turn to proceed towards Bogadi.  The rider on the scooter got a shock to see the bike suddenly taking a turn towards him. To their luck, there was no collision between the two vehicles.

In terms of road safety, both actions are unacceptable and avoidable. Long time back a teenager had a narrow escape from a collision with a bus when he violated lane discipline at this Circle nearly a year ago. It has become a common feature even for cars and autos to violate lane discipline across all such Circles in the city and driving in a risky way. People are losing patience on the road and in a hurry violating road safety rules, which is to be discouraged by one and all, as  WHO said ‘most of the road accidents are avoidable in nature’.
