‘Silk India’ exhibition begins

Mysore/Mysuru: Artisans from various parts of the country have come to Mysuru to exhibit their ethnic weaves and traditional pure silk and cotton products at the “Silk India – Wedding Special Collection” at Nanjaraja Bahaddur Choultry in city.

The expo, organised by Orissa Art and Craft Committee, founded by a group of artisans, designers, social activists, academics and environmentalists, attempts to promote exquisite traditional skill, cotton and creations of the weavers and encouraging them to be contemporary and economically relevant.

The expo includes gorgeous Uppadas, Banarasi silks, Gadwals, Dharmavaram, Jamdanis, Jamawars and Sambalpuris; Sarees, dress materials, items of silk and cotton sarees, suit dress materials, fashion jewellery, home furnishing designer clothes from each region of the country are also on display.

It provides shoppers with a kaleidoscope of India’s colour, diversity and talent. Artisans from 14 handloom weaving States including Assam, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal and many designers from metros working in collaboration with the weavers are displaying more than 50,000 varieties of their work here.

‘Silk India’ expo-cum-sale, which started on Feb.16, will  be held till Feb. 25 between 10.30 am and 8.30 pm.

Cotton and Silk handloom products on display have a range between Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,50,000 at the upper end for exclusive hand-crafted sarees.

Dokra Tribal Jewellery and Channapatna toys are also catching the attention of the customers.  Coimbatore silk, Muga silk from Assam, Bangalore silk, crepe and georgette sarees, raw silk materials from Karnataka, Kalamkari, Pochampally, Mangalgiri dress materials, Organza Silk Sarees, pure silk zari sarees from Andhra Pradesh and more  are available at the exhibition.
