Mysuru:  The election to the Legislative Council seat from South Teachers Constituency, comprising the districts of Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan and Chamarajanagar, on Friday, recorded a total voter turnout of 79.91 percent.

The counting of votes will be taken up on June 12 at Maharani’s Women’s Commerce and Management College in city.

While Chamarajanagar, which has 2,578 voters recorded the highest voting percentage with 86.41 percent, Mysuru district which has 9,643 voters, recorded the least with 77.12 percent, while Mandya, which has 4,857 voters recorded 83.92 percent and Hassan, which has 3,600 voters recorded 83.88 percent polling.

The election authorities had made elaborate arrangements for free and fair polling.

The polling which began at 7 am, ended at 5 pm with 16,523 out of 20,678 teachers exercising their franchise. A total of nine candidates — sitting MLC Marithibbegowda from JD(S), B. Niranjanmurthy from BJP and M. Lakshmana from the Congress and six Independents were in the fray.

Candidates fate sealed in ballot boxes: Even as the voting concluded at 5 pm yesterday, the fate of all the candidates in the fray is sealed in the ballot boxes.

The ballot boxes from 42 centres in the four districts that comprise the South Teachers Constituency has been kept in the Strong Room of Maharani’s Women’s Commerce and Management College, Valmiki Road Junction, Paduvarahalli (Vinayakanagar), where the counting of votes will be taken up at 8 am on June 12.

The Strong Room has been sealed and the jurisdictional Jayalakshmipuram Police are guarding the counting venue round the clock.
