Special arrangements for physically challenged to vote welcomed

April 13, 2019

Mysuru: The Election Commission of India (ECI), District Administration and Mysuru Vikala Vikasa Trust has lauded the efforts of the Administration for creating facilities to the Physically Challenged (Persons with Disabilities) and weak senior citizens to freely cast votes without                                                              any hindrance.

Trust’s Managing Trustee S.S. Vaidyanath, addressing a press meet at Pathrakartara Bhavan here yesterday, said that the efforts that has gone into making things easy for the physically challenged persons like providing wheelchairs, magnifying lens for people with poor eye sight, pick up and drop facilities for weak senior citizens to the polling booths, Braille voter slips along with EVMs with stickers that have perforations to help visually impaired persons read the candidates’ list, along with appointing people to help the voters to cast votes, are all very laudable steps taken by the EC.

Political reservation for Physically challenged: The Physically challenged must be allowed to contest in the elections and they should be nominated to participate in the political process, urged Vaidyanath.

“Even though we constitute 3 to 4 percent of the population, we have not been given political importance. Taking this into consideration, the physically challenged should be nominated and allowed to join the mainstream in the society,” he demanded.
