February 21, 2018

Mysuru: Over a period of years, the number of medically-compromised patients requiring dental treatment is on the rise. In order to provide dental care safely to these patients, a proper understanding of their medical conditions, medications taken and investigations required is very essential. Hence a Special Interest Group (SIG) called ‘Management of Medical Problems and Medical Emergencies in Dentistry’ was created by JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru.

This group consists of like-minded Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons Dr. Sahith Kumar Shetty (Group Co-ordinator), Dr. S. Manjula, Dr. S. Shyam Sundar, Dr. S. Shivananda, Dr. S.N. Chandan, Gynecologist Dr. S. Mamatha, Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. M. Mahesh and Periodontist Dr. Sheela Kumar Gujjari.

SIG intends to create a scientific platform as a forum of discussion amongst various departments of medicine and dentistry regarding comprehensive management of patients presenting with various medically-compromised conditions so as to develop a scientific and rational algorithm in management of such patients.

Cardiac arrest is an important cause of death of people in society, 70% of which occurs in house. Hence, Basic Life Support (BLS) is an important life-saving skill everybody has to possess.

The SIG with this noble theme conducted a two-day workshop for practicing dental surgeons on management of medically-compromised patients in dentistry and a hands-on course on Basic Life Support recently at JSS Dental College and Hospital. A total of 65 delegates participated and they were trained in providing Basic Life Support to cardiac arrest patients.
