Spotlight on streetlights

Mysuru: Before the MCC Council meeting began yesterday, BJP Corporators led by leader of the Opposition B.V. Manjunath sat on a dharna outside the MCC office over the issue of dysfunctional streetlights in most pockets of the city, which left them plunged in darkness after dusk.

Highlighting the dangers that lack of streetlights posed to commuters, in addition to safety issues, the BJP Corporators informed the Council which met soon after, that citizens of Mysuru wanted this problem solved at the earliest so as to be able to travel at night with no fear.

BJP Corporator Shivakumar tabled the issue for discussion at the meeting and said, “MCC has undertaken the exercise to replace the existing bulbs with LED lamps. But, this will take almost a year to complete. What will the residents do till then? They will be left in the dark,” Shivakumar said.

Independent Corporator M.V. Ramprasad had donned a ‘Mysore Peta’ fixed with a bulb on the top and flickering LED lights, throughout the meeting to draw the attention towards the problem. Soon after the discussion, Mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath announced that a MCC delegation will meet Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy urging him to permit the MCC to install lights at critical areas till the State Government’s LED lamp project is implemented.
