Mysuru: GPIER Theatre Group will be staging the play ‘Manteswamy Katha Prasanga’ tomorrow (Sept.13) at Kiru Rangamandira in Kalamandira premises at 6.30 pm. The play, written by H.S. Shivaprakash, is directed by former Rangayana artiste Mime Ramesh.
‘Manteswamy Katha Prasanga’ is one of the most important oral epics of Karnataka. Manteswamy was a Veerashaiva saint and a folk hero who lived during the 15th century.
The play begins with the arrival of Manteswamy in Kalyana, who makes a dramatic appearance on a dung heap at the entrance of the city. Basavanna’s wife arrives there and takes him to the Palace where a confrontation between the Sharanas and Manteswamy takes place. His greatness is proved equivocally and that heralds the victory of the lowly over insincere devotees. This journey is punctuated by his efforts to acquire disciples.
In this play the characters represent a stage in civilisation when technology had to be liberated from its hereditary practitioners.
The music for the play is scored by Devanand Varaprasad and costume is designed by N. Divya. Raghavendra Achappa has designed the lighting while Nithin Kodiyalbyle has provided stage design.
Tickets are priced at Rs.50 each. For details, contact Mob: 90193-70060.
