Stalled zipline project at Karanji Lake resumes

June 5, 2026
  • Plan includes 21-metre eco-tower, canopy walk, rope bridge and food zone
  • Rs. 18.36 crore transformation under Union Government’s Swadesh Darshan 2.0

Mysuru, June 5 (MTY&BCT)- Civil works on the proposed zipline project along the banks of Karanji Lake Nature Park, adjoining Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens (Mysuru Zoo), have resumed after receiving the necessary clearances.

The works, being executed by the Tourism Department, were halted in February this year by Mysuru Zoo Executive Director P. Anusha, citing the absence of mandatory permission from the Zoo authorities.

In her order, Anusha had observed that although the Rs. 18.36-crore tourism development project under the Centre’s Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme had been approved by Zoo Authority of Karnataka (ZAK), the Tourism Department had not obtained clearance from the Zoo for carrying out physical works within the eco-sensitive lake zone, including excavation using earthmovers.

Following subsequent discussions and procedural approvals, the project has now been cleared and work has resumed, aimed at enhancing visitor experience and boosting tourism.

The project includes an eco-tower, zipline, lake walk, canopy walk, rope bridge, upgraded walking paths and a food zone. The Zoo Authority of Karnataka has stipulated that construction must not adversely impact the lake’s ecology or wildlife habitat.

21-metre eco-tower for panoramic views

The centrepiece of the project is a seven-storey eco- tower coming up near Thandi Sadak Road. Rising to a height of 21 metres, the tower is being designed with a circular ramp to allow visitors to reach the top with ease.

With a base diametre of 24 metres and a tower width of 17.25 metres, the structure is expected to accommodate hundreds of visitors at a time.

Apart from offering panoramic views of Mysuru and the surrounding greenery, it will also serve as a bird-watching point, making it one of the first such facilities in South Karnataka.

Upgraded walkway, zipline

A three-kilometre walking path from the main entrance ticket counter to the eco-tower is also being developed. Existing pathways are being upgraded to provide a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for visitors exploring the lake premises.

Adventure enthusiasts can look forward to a 450- metre zipline stretching across the lake. Starting near the eco-tower and ending close to the Lalitha Mahal Road entrance, the zipline will allow visitors to glide over the water while enjoying aerial views of the lake and its ecosystem.

Lake walk and canopy walk

Another key attraction will be a 350-metre twin-level structure comprising a lake walk and a canopy walk.

Located next to the eco-tower, the lower deck will function as a lake walk. In contrast, the upper deck will take visitors through the tree canopy, offering the experience of walking over water and among treetops.

Rope bridge and food zone

A 30-metre rope bridge is also planned, aimed especially at children and families. Built using ropes and cables, it will offer the experience of crossing a suspension-style bridge.

To address the lack of refreshment facilities within the lake premises, a food zone will be set up with two container-based kiosks.

Visitors will be able to purchase drinking water, beverages, snacks and light refreshments. The kiosks will be operated by the Zoo Authority.

Work back on track after delay, says Tourism Deputy Director

The project had faced a temporary setback after the Zoo Executive Director halted construction, citing a lack of formal approval. Following the necessary clearances, work has now resumed.

Tourism Department Deputy Director Dr. V.M. Prabhuswamy told Star of Mysore that the foundation and curing work for the eco tower has already been completed. At the same time, installation of the iron framework is underway.

The entire project is expected to be completed within the next nine months. Despite a delay of nearly two months, he is confident the new attractions will be ready for visitors by next year.

Dr. Prabhuswamy added that regular quality inspections are being conducted to ensure the project meets the required standards.
