Bengaluru: The State Government’s coffers have swelled with crores of rupees during the New Year celebrations, with an estimated Rs. 193 crore worth of liquor sold for New Year’s Eve.

In December, Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) witnessed the sale of 3,07,953 boxes, while beer saw the sale of 1,95,005 boxes. Despite the rise in alcohol prices, liquor enthusiasts have enthusiastically embraced a spirited celebration. Comparing revenue figures, the State earned Rs. 3,000 crore in December this year, a significant increase from Rs. 2,611 crore earned in the same month last year. The average monthly liquor sales in the State is around Rs. 2,500 crore.

The total revenue from alcohol sales has shown substantial growth over the past two years, contributing to Government revenues. In cities and rural areas alike, residents ushered in the New Year with grand celebrations fuelled by alcohol.

The New Year festivities, especially in Bengaluru and Mysuru, resemble a ‘liquor rush,’ with youths and women actively participating in the revelry. On the last day of 2023, the State Government-owned MSIL liquor outlets recorded a total sales figure of Rs. 18.85 crore across 1,031 outlets.

This marked an increase of     Rs. 4.34 crore compared to the sales recorded on the same day of the previous year (Dec. 31, 2022). Notably, an outlet near Raichur Railway Station achieved the highest sales at Rs. 11.66 lakh, followed by another outlet on Gunj Road in Raichur, with sales amounting to Rs. 9.96 lakh. Among the districts, Bengaluru Urban topped the list with sales touching Rs. 1.82 crore, a notable increase from the Rs. 1.35 crore recorded on the same day the previous year.
