The competition began with trial rounds on Oct. 16 and 18 cows made it to the final round. For the first time, milking machines were used. Cows yielding more than 25 litres of milk a day were also given an incentive of Rs. 10,000 each.
Temporary sheds were set up for the cattle, with individual fans to keep them cool. Soft coconut coir mats were laid on the floors to prevent strain on the animals.
Their diet included rice flour, husk, bran, cattle feed, fresh and dry grass, maize gruel, millet porridge and fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, carrots, beetroot and radish, along with sugarcane juice.
