Stop desecrating Chamundi foothill

October 28, 2023

Sir,

Being a regular visitor to Chamundi Hill, I have seen the beauty of the Hill on all seasons and it has been a perfect place for those who prefer serene atmosphere for their early morning walks, fitness enthusiasts (step-climbing) or for those with love for divinity.

During festivities, men and women, dress up well, visit temples, offer prayers and enjoy with their family and friends. But the same people tarnish the beauty of this Hill with plastics and papers littered all over.

The picture above shows the pathetic scene of the foothill post the annual Chamundeshwari Rathotsava held on Oct. 26, despite plastic ban rule in force since Sept. 1 atop the Hill!

The regulation was followed by the order of National Green Tribunal State Committee Chairman Justice Subhash B. Adi during his meeting in city on July 14, 2023, to make Chamundi Hill totally plastic-free by Dasara. However, post-Dasara things seem to be totally opposite.

It would also be apt to make a rule similar to that of Mysuru Zoo where people carrying plastic bottles are stopped at the entrance and Rs. 10 is collected from them for taking plastic bottles inside the Zoo and if the plastic bottle is produced at the exit, Rs. 10 is refunded.

The very word ‘Development’ scares me for the harm it could cause to Chamundi Hill. Instead, why not preserve the natural beauty of the Hill without desecrating in the name of development. It is the responsibility of every visitor to keep the Hill clean and green.
