Srirangapatna: A student, who had come to Balamuri along with others, was drowned in River Cauvery on Sunday.
The deceased student is Daniel E. Thomas (17), son of E.T. Thomas, a native of H.D. Kote, who was residing at Siddalingapura village. He was pursuing his first year PUC. It is learnt that he had taken part in the religious retreat programme at Mother Teresa Church near Kalenahalli in Mandya.
Following summer vacation, Daniel, along with 50 others, had arrived for the retreat programme on Saturday itself as the event was to be held on Sunday. On Sunday evening, Daniel and others, after visiting tourist spots in Srirangapatna and surrounding places, arrived at Balamuri. He then ventured into River Cauvery for a swim but was caught in the strong currents and was swept away.
Meanwhile, those who had come with him, immediately informed KRS Police, who reached the spot, summoned expert swimmers and divers, besides launching a search operation. As it got dark, the search operation was suspended. The search operation resumed on Monday morning and the body was traced and fished out from the river. The body was shifted to MMC&RI mortuary, where post-mortem was conducted and the body was handed over to the family members.
A case has been registered at KRS Police Station.
