Mysore/Mysuru: Commercial Taxes Commissioner C. Shikha advised students to shun negative thoughts and focus on positivity to realise their desired goals and dreams.

She was speaking as the chief guest at the 15th Graduation Day of JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science on Ooty Road here yesterday.

Asking the students to think and dream big, Shikha, an IAS officer who had previously served as Mysuru Deputy Commissioner (DC), said that students must work hard to achieve their dreams and aspirants of competitive exams must give top priority for knowledge enhancement and keep themselves updated on the latest developments across the globe.

Calling upon graduates to develop the habit of working hard so that they are not stressed out in future, she said that one has to give his/ her best for clearing the Civil Services Exam conducted by the UPSC.

Recalling her service in Gadag which was known for flash floods, Shikha explained how she and her officials worked round the clock to rescue and rehabilitate people. Urging the graduates to join the Indian work force, she highlighted the kind of opportunities that exist and how fresh graduates can contribute to the development of the nation.

Maintaining that almost all Government servants right from Village Accountants (VAs) to IAS Officers work under tremendous pressure for the welfare of the society, she said that students must take all their failures as stepping stones to success without giving up hopes on achieving their set goals.

Highlighting the importance of Graduation Day in the life of a student, she advised the girl students to give importance to higher education. Women employees in the Commercial Taxes Department are playing a crucial role in record GST Tax collection, she added.

Shikha also called upon the students to use social media and other communication tools and  scientific and technological applications for the betterment of their personality, career, profession and society.

A total of 1,054 students, including 594 graduates and 460 post-graduates received their  degrees on completion of various courses. 65 Rank holders and top scorers were felicitated on the occasion. Also, 10 students were distributed Endowment Prizes.

Suttur Mutt Seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji graced the occasion. JSS Mahavidyapeetha Executive Secretary Dr. C.G. Betsurmath, College CEO Prof. B.V. Sambashivaiah, Principal Prof. M.P. Vijayendrakumar, Controller of Examinations Dr. B. Prabhuswamy, Dr. N. Rajendra Prasad and others were present during the programme.
