Summer School in Computational Linguistics inaugurated at CIIL

Mysore/Mysuru: A 15-day Summer School in Computational Linguistics (SSCL), organised under the aegis of Linguistic Data Consortium for Indian Languages (LDC-IL) began at the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) premises on Hunsur road here this morning.

Speaking after inaugurating the Summer School, LDC-IL President Prof. G. Umamaheshwara Rao said LDC-IL is a scheme of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, which is implemented by and housed inside the CIIL premises, Mysuru.

 Pointing out that the Summer School, which will go on until July 3, will mainly focus on creating resources, both in terms of human and data offering a diverse range of learning opportunities, he said that through this programme, students and research scholars will have the opportunity to learn from and interact with distinguished scholars and experts in Computational Linguistics.

Prof. Rao further said that the main objectives of the programme are: to train internal staff members with the recent advancements in the field; to create resources (corpus) for future work within the project and to prepare resource persons in Indian Languages for future utility.

CIIL Director Prof. Shailendra Mohan delivered the presidential address, while SSCL-2023 Convenor Dr. Narayan Kumar Chaudhury delivered the introductory address. About 100 participants from across the country are taking part in this programme, which concludes on July 3.
