Tabla Maestro Zakir Hussain passes away

New Delhi: Renowned Tabla Maestro Zakir Hussain passed away at a hospital in San Francisco, USA, on Monday. He was 73.

The family, in a statement, said Zakir Hussain died from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) complications.

The Tabla Maestro, who had been hospitalised for the past two weeks, was being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Hussain’s sister Khurshid Aulia said, he passed away “very peacefully.” Zakir Hussain is survived by his wife Antonia Minnecola and two daughters, Anisa Qureshi and  Isabella Qureshi.

Born on Mar. 9, 1951, Zakir Hussain was the son of legendary Tabla Artiste Ustad Alla Rakha. Zakir Hussain has received four Grammy Awards, including three at the 66th awards ceremony earlier this year. He was also decorated with Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002 and Padma Vibhushan in 2023 by the Government of India.
