Talented chess player: Y.G. Vijayeendra

Chess is a traditional sport and has been played in our country for a long time. Mysuru has been producing talented players from time to time who have gone on to represent the country in different levels. Mysuru’s former State champion Y.G. Vijayeendra did everyone proud by securing second place in the Bavaria Donna Cup, 2018 held at Regensburg, Germany, from May 9 to 13. His excellent performance in this tournament enabled him to improve in his rating and he is our ‘Star This Week.’

Vijayeendra, a former Karnataka State champion, tied with Germany’s Lennart Uphoof with six points from seven rounds and secured second place.

Lennart Uphoof of Germany with a better progressive tie-break score won the title.  Bernard Schimid, Florian Huiber and Alexander Stadler secured 4 points each and secured the places from third to fifth in the final rankings.

Presently with a rating of 2122, Vijayeendra intends to take part in more rated tournaments in the future and secure his IM norm in the future. Earlier, Vijayeendra secured second place in the Sri lanka Open International Rating Chess Championships-2017 held in Colombo. He drew his last round against Ratnayake and secured 8.5 points to finish second.

Vijayeendra has many won district tournaments and has emerged as the champion for a record number of times in the Open and Rapid Tourneys.

He presently coaches children in Mysuru and is passionate to promote chess.
