Kho-Kho is a traditional game which is very popular in our country. Kho-Kho helps open up the minds of students and allows them to find new ways of solving problems. Karnataka has produced many a talented Kho-Kho players and Mysuru has produced many players of repute who have gone on to represent the State and country in various events. One such talented player who has been the darling of the Kho-Kho lovers recently in the South Zone Inter-University Men’s Kho-Kho Championship 2017-18 which was played from Jan.17 to 20, is Mysore University’s all-rounder A.V. Madhu. Madhu played a big role in University of Mysore’s progress in the Tournament and was the mainstay of the team which won the South Zone title. He is our ‘Star This Week.’
The 21-year-old is the son of Venkatesh and Janaki, residents of Hassan. Madhu is a 1st year BA student at NDRK College, Hassan. Madhu has represented Karnataka in the Senior National Kho-Kho Championship six times and was part of the Karnataka Senior team which won third place in the Senior Nationals held at Telangana in 2015.
Madhu started playing Kho-Kho when he was a student at the Aravinda HS, Hassan, in the 10th standard. Inspired by his seniors in the Hasanamba Sports Club and encouraged by senior player Adarsh, Madhu took up to the game seriously and made steady progress.
Madhu represented Karnataka in the Sub-Junior Nationals in 2011 and gained valuable exposure. He represented Karnataka in the Rural Nationals in Andhra during the same year and Karnataka finished fourth in the Championship.
Madhu has been representing Mysore University for the last three years and in 2016-17, was part of the team which secured the third place in the All India Inter-University level.
An all-rounder, he excels with his quickness and dodging capabilities.
Encouraged and guided by University of Mysore’s Kho-Kho coach and Ekalavya Awardee M.L. Gopinath, and his parents and his Club, Madhu aims to represent India in the days to come.
