Tennis: Upset win for Varun

Unseeded Varun Baradwaj, a 7th std. student from Vibgyor HS, Bengaluru, came back fighting after being a set down and scored an upset win over seventh seed Rama Danush Arya (Kar) 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5) and entered the quarter-finals in the boys U-14 singles event in the MTC AITA Talent series Tennis Tournament for U-14 & U-16 (boys & girls), played at the MTC courts here yesterday.

In another upset of the day, unseeded local girl J. Apoorva, a 8th standard student of JSS (P) School, and a product of Mysore Tennis Club (MTC), playing a consistent baseline game, shocked sixth seeded Bengaluru girl Samrudhi Pokarna 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-5 and entered the quarter-finals in the girls U-16 Singles event.

Boys U-14 (Pre-quarter-finals): Mandeep Reddy bt Selvaraj Carwin 3-6, 6-2, 6-0, Ashwin Shivshankar bt Lohit kantraj 7-6(4), 6-2, Mustafa Murtaza Raza bt Yashas M. Urs 6-1, 6-4, Cavin Thimaiya bt K. Nikith 6-0, 6-2, Rurik Rajini bt Aaron Ronaldino 6-0, 6-4, Rakshak Tarun bt Suhas Soma 6-0, 6-0, Varun Baradwaj bt Rama Dhanush Arya 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(5), Bhuvan Prakash bt Allen Chris Joel 6-0, 6-0.

Boys U-16 (Pre-quarter-finals): Saran Samir bt H.N. Dhanush 6-2, 6-0, Natin Ram bt H.S. Kishan 6-0, 6-1.

Girls U-16: M. Jasha bt Sreenidhi Balaji 6-4, 6-4, Bhoomika Satish bt Zyna Amber Salar 6-4, 6-2, J. Apoorva bt Samrudhi Pokarna 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-5, Vanya Srivatsav bt A. Aishwarya 6-1, 6-2, Meenakshi Lavkumar bt Binitha Rakesh 6-1, 6-0, Sanjana Reddy bt Siri M. Patil 6-2, 7-6 (6), Charmi Gopinath bt M.P. Hamshini 6-0, 6-0.
