Three-day World Summit on Sustainable Development begins

February 22, 2019

Mysuru:  “Sustainable Development must inter-link poverty, population pressure and degradation of environmental resources. The conclusion reached by the Brundtland Commission is that the problems could be addressed only if these three are taken into account collectively,” said Prof. Sushma Yadav, Member, University Grants Commission and Vice Chancellor, Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, Sonepat, Haryana.

She was delivering the presidential address during the inaugural function of a three-day Multidisciplinary World Summit on Resource Management and Sustainable Development, organised by the University of Mysore in association with Maharani’s Arts College for Women, James Cook University, Singapore and International Council for Development Research at the Senate Bhavan in Manasagangothri campus, here this morning and said that India is booming and sustainable development becomes more important.

“Natural resources are depleting at alarming rates because of their irrational use pattern. Rural communities in particular are greatly affected by the increasing use of natural resources. To many of them development is about livelihood and survival rather than increasing productivity and accumulation of wealth,” she pointed out.

Earlier, University of Mysore Vice Chancellor Prof. G. Hemantha Kumar inaugurated the programme and released the proceedings. He said that sustainable development is important for entire humanity and for future generations as it will have a great impact on social and economic development.

Campus Dean of James Cook University, Singapore Dr. Abhishek Singh Bhati delivered the keynote address.
