Time to act now

Attack on MCC staff is an attack on every law-abiding Mysurean

Sir,

I strongly condemn the brutal attack on Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) staff, as reported in Star of Mysore yesterday.

This is not an attack on a few individuals. It is an attack on the rule of law and on every law-abiding Mysurean. Those behind this condemnable act must be exposed and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. This incident should not be forgotten or ignored after a few days, as often happens.

I suggest involving more citizens and institutions when the issue is being discussed.

First, crowd-sourcing to raise funds to honour Raghu, the MCC staff member who was attacked and had to be admitted to the ICU, where he received 30 stitches for stab injuries. Let us start a citizens’ fund to support him and his family. It will send a message that Mysuru stands with its public servants.

Second, an NGO like Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) could take the lead again. MGP had earlier written to the CM and authorities demanding a ban on illegal flexes that damage public property and create hazards.

It may consider taking the lead now to mobilise citizens, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and other civic groups to seek justice for the staff and stronger protection for MCC teams.

It is a crying shame if Mysuru needs Police support to carry out a simple operation to remove illegal flexes. We need to send a strong message that anyone interfering, violently or non-violently, with such activity will be punished without exception.

I urge the MCC Commissioner, Police and elected representatives to act swiftly. Let this be a turning point where we collectively say: “Hands off our civic workers.”
