July 26, 2017

Mysuru: People were seeing red, as the prices of tomatoes was inching towards Rs. 100 a kg in the city. However, the prices are dropping as movement of tomatoes to Kerala and TN has been hit, following lorry strike in Kerala.

Until yesterday, tomato was sold in retail at Rs. 60 to Rs. 70 a kg in the city while in other places like Bengaluru it had touched Rs. 100 a kg. But the prices have dropped and the green tomato is being sold at Rs. 40 a kg and the red jamoon variety at Rs. 50 to Rs. 55 a kg in Devaraja Market and on streets at Rs. 50 to Rs. 60 a kg, while Hopcoms is selling it at Rs. 55 a kg. In the wholesale market, a crate of tomato weighing about 22 kgs costs Rs. 800.

Tomato scarce at Churumuri carts

One of the major ingredients that the mouth-watering Churumuri, the signature Mysuru snack has is the red tomato, which gives that extra tangy taste. But, a churumuri gourmet specialist told Star of Mysore that the rising tomato prices is forcing the churumuri cart person to avoid using tomatoes, thus diminishing the taste. A churumuri maker in VV Mohalla said that as the prices have shot the roof he could not add it as the people will not be prepared to pay higher prices than the normal cost of the churumuri.
