Trader loses Rs. 12.10 lakh… But gets cyber crime notice!

October 3, 2026

Mysuru: In a classic case of making someone a scapegoat for the crime they committed, cyber criminals, apart from hacking the account of a person, have hacked the accounts of others too and cleverly passed the buck on the first person whose account they hacked.
Details
A trader of K.R. Nagar received information from HDFC Bank Manager Anantharaju who said that some unknown persons had withdrawn a cash of Rs. 12.10 lakh from his account.
The shocked trader then rushed to the bank, when he came to know that cyber criminals had withdrawn a total cash of Rs. 12,09,762 from his accounts in Delhi branch and other places in a 20-day period from Aug. 17 to Sept. 7.
This apart, the fraudsters had also withdrawn a total of Rs. 1.46 lakh through UPI mode using the mobile number of one R. Venkatesh.
Apart from hacking the accounts of the trader, the fraudsters had got transferred the bank account holder’s residential address to an address in Rajasthan and as such, the trader did not immediately come to know of the money withdrawals as he did not receive any mobile messages from the bank.
The trader was in for another shock, when he received a notice from Bengaluru’s Sheshadripuram CEN (Cyber, Economics, and Narcotics) Crime Police Station on Sept. 17 mentioning that an amount of Rs. 1.46 lakh had been illegally credited to his account from the account of one Venkatesh and an FIR has been registered against him.
The shocked trader went to Sheshadripuram CEN Police Station and said that he had lost Rs. 12.10 lakh to cyber criminals and showed his bank account entries.
The Police, after a thorough scrutiny, found that the address of the account itself had been fraudulently transferred and suggested the trader to lodge a complaint with Mysuru CEN Police. Later, the trader lodged a complaint with the District CEN Police.
