Traffic notice mix-up: Fined for offence while on a train!

April 1, 2025

Sir,

I was surprised to receive a notice under Section 180 of the Motor Vehicles Act (No. 10879171 dated 16th March 2025), served on me by post on 26th March 2025, at the residential address of my late father, Abdul Karim (Retd. DSP), at No. 10, Vivekananda Road, Yadavagiri.

The Officer-in-Charge of the Enforcement Automation Centre issued the notice during my recent visit to Mysuru. The notice directs me to pay a fine of Rs. 500 for allegedly “riding without a helmet” on a motorcycle bearing Registration No. CTO 2838 near LIC Circle, Mysuru, at 14:42 hours on 15th March 2025.

I was both puzzled and amused by this, as the notice included a CCTV image of the motorcycle being ridden by a man without a helmet. However, at the time of the alleged offence, I was travelling on Train No. 17397 (Basava Express) to Bengaluru, having briefly camped in Mysuru.

Moreover, I have never owned the motorcycle in question. I do, however, know that late M. Shakeel Ahmed was the registered first owner of the Yamaha RX100 bearing Registration No. CTO 2838 since July 1987.

An officer of the Karnataka STF and MM Hills Police Station, he was killed in the line of duty in an ambush by the notorious sandalwood smuggler Veerappan and his gang in August 1992. Following his death, the motorcycle came into the possession of my father, Abdul Karim, who sold it in November 2001 to a Mysuru resident whose name and address are unknown to me.

Given these facts, I am unable to comprehend how this notice has been erroneously issued to me for an offence I never committed. I urge the Traffic Police and other authorities concerned to thoroughly investigate the matter, trace the current registered owner of the vehicle and identify the rider involved in the violation.

The actual culprits should be held accountable, instead of issuing notices to innocent individuals and subjecting them to unnecessary harassment.
