Training programme on Laboratory Phonetics and Phonology at CIIL

Mysuru: A six-day national-level workshop on Advanced Workshop-cum-Training Programme on Laboratory Phonetics and Phonology started for the doctoral researchers and post graduate students  of the country at Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru on Sept.25.

The objective of this workshop is to showcase cutting edge “laboratory phonetics and phonology” approaches to Indian languages. The participants will have an opportunity to learn state-of-the-art methods and techniques in the field of phonetics and phonology. The workshop will be a fine blend of lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions, and will cover different topics on Applied Phonetics of Indian Languages, Speech Sounds, Syllable Structure, Tone, Intonation, Optimality theory, Neural Networks for Language Science, etc.  

Prof. Peri Bhaskar Rao, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Japan; Dr. Shakunthala Mahanta, IIT, Guwahati; Dr. Indranil Dutta, EFLU, Hyderabad; Dr. Somadev Kar, IIT, Ropar; Dr. Amalesh Gope, Tezpur University and Dr. Somanath Roy, Melvault Software Pvt. Ltd. will train the participants through lectures and hands-on sessions. About 60 participants from several Central and State Universities, NITs,   IITs, IIITs and other technical institutes of India will be benefited from the programme.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Peri Bhaskar Rao, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Japan. In his inaugural address he called upon the young scholars of linguistics to gain better knowledge in the area of phonetics and phonology to contribute more for the Indian language community.

In his Presidential remarks, Prof. D.G. Rao, Director, CIIL said that the nation is looking forward to young scholars to fulfill Make-in-India vision launched by the Prime Minister of India.
