Mysore/Mysuru:  Senior Poet Prof. H.S. Shivaprakash said that translation is not only a transformation of language and literature, but also incorporates  a broad cultural concept.

He was speaking on the topic “Translation as Creativity in Indian Literary Cultures” at the fifth edition of Mysuru Literary Fest-2024, organised by Mysore Literary Association at Maharaja’s College Centenary Hall here yesterday.

Observing that there are many forms of text translation, Prof. Shivaprakash said that while translation from one language to another is one form, translation within the periphery of the language is another form. The translation of Kumaravyasa Bharata to Hosagannada is another form. Likewise, a subject that transforms from one form to another is one more type, he said while citing an example where a story with a cinema background transforms itself into another medium of expression.

Giving one more example of translation, Prof. Shivaprakash said that a scenario described in Akkamahadevi’s vachana turned into a cinema scene and later unfolded itself in Manipuri language through a play. Translation takes its pride in incorporating broader concepts and vision, he added.

Visual Artist, Poet and Short Story Writer Anuradha Nalpat,  who spoke on the topic “Homunculus (Little Man) and the Art of Yo-Yo ing” began her speech by rendering a self-composed poem. She explained what  exotic paintings meant.

 Prof. N.  Manu Chakravarthy, Film and Cultural Critic, spoke on the topic “Reading Literature: En-countering the Spirit of the Times.”

Association President Prof. K.C. Belliappa presided.
