Efforts by lecturer yield results
Mysore/Mysuru: University of Mysore (UoM) has decided to resume M.Sc course in Cyber Security from the next academic year. In fact, the Varsity had started this course in 2017-18 at the Centre for Information Sciences and Technology (CIST) but it was stopped the very next year citing ‘poor response’ from students.
Now, with pressure from intellectuals, the authorities have taken a decision to re-start it from the next academic year. Not much publicity was given for this course when it was started four years ago because of which the admission of students was not as much as expected. In Private Universities, studying this two-year course would cost Rs.8 lakh and the same thing in Foreign Varsities would cost Rs. 30 lakh.
The UoM did not fix exorbitant fees, but not much publicity was given for this course resulting in low enrolment of students.
Taking objection to the sudden cancellation of this course, M.R. Prasad Urs, a lecturer at Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Vidya Samsthe, Nazarbad, had written to the Department of Higher Education.
He had contended that it was not a correct decision on the part of University to cancel this course at a time when India was making rapid strides in the field of digital technology. This course was panacea to the burning issue of ‘cyber attack’. More students will definitely join this course if proper publicity was given, he noted.
Prasad Urs told SOM that based on his letter, the Department of Higher Education has directed the UoM authorities to re-start the course from next academic year, and to give wide publicity for attracting more number of students.
