Upset over loan waiver limit, farmer ends life in Mandya

July 6, 2018

Mandya: Hours after Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy announced a farm loan waiver of Rs. 34,000 crore that will waive off loans up to Rs. 2 lakh, one farmer from Mandya committed suicide by hanging late last evening.

The farmer has been identified as 60-year-old K.C. Bhadraiah of Kacchigere near Mandya. Ironically, Bhadraiah was a great fan of Kumaraswamy and had hoped that the CM will waive off all farm loans. Bhadraiah had borrowed Rs. 5 lakh loan and had grown sugarcane in a 2-acre land. Due to successive drought, he could not make any profits.

Villagers and family members of Bhadraiah said that he had heavy expectations on Kumaraswamy and hoped that his loan of Rs. 5 lakh would be waived off. However, he was disappointed as the CM announced only Rs. 2 lakh loan waiver.
