Varsity felicitates winning sportspersons and coaches

Mysore/Mysuru: The University of Mysore (UoM) felicitated sportspersons and coaches who won medals at different tournaments held in 2021-22 at a programme organised at the University’s Department of Physical Education premises here recently. All the achievers were presented cash prizes, totalling Rs. 26 lakh.

Speaking on the occasion, UoM Vice-Chancellor Prof. G. Hemantha Kumar said that the University is also promoting sports apart from academics.

Noting that no sports tournaments or competitions were held in the past two years due to COVID pandemic, he said that it is a matter of delight that students of the University have bagged so many medals and prizes at various sports tournaments held during 2021-22. He asked the students to carry forward this significant success in future tournaments too.

The prize-winning sportspersons and coaches are:

V. Ambika (Rs.30,000), who won gold medal in Shot-put at Khelo India Sports Meet held at Bengaluru’s Jain University, her coach Puneeth (Rs.30,000) and Manager Bhaskar (Rs.25,000).

S. Ashwini (Rs.30,000), who bagged gold medal in the 45-kg Women Karate Championship, her coach Jaywant (Rs. 30,000); Diya S. Urs (Rs. 25,000), who bagged the silver medal and her coach Bharathi (Rs.20,000).

D.S. Thejas, who bagged bronze medal in the 60-kg Men Karate Championship and his coach Jaywant (Rs. 20,000 each); Carl Gibson, who won silver medal in Kick Boxing Championship and his coach (Rs. 25,000 each); D. Vinith Raj, M. Gunashekar and Dinesh Kumar, who bagged the bronze Medal (Rs. 20,000 each).

S. Shalini, who won bronze medal in Women’s Kick Boxing Championship, her coach and the College which she represented (Rs.60,000 in total); S. Rakesh, who won bronze medal in wrestling, his coach Manjappa and college (Rs. 20,000 each); K.R. Sachin, who won bronze medal in Fencing, his coach Shantaraju and college (Rs. 20,000 each).

The following were also awarded cash prizes for winning medals at the All India Inter-University Kho-Kho Tournament for Women held recently. All the players of the team, the coach and Manager were presented cash prizes totalling Rs. 4.2 lakh, members of the Women Hockey Team, which won the silver medal, the coach and Manager, Rs. 25,000 each, members of the Women Volleyball Team which bagged second place – Rs. 56,000 and  members of the Women’s Handball Team which won the third place, the coach and Manager- Rs. 28,000.

UoM Finance Officer Dr. Sangeetha Gajanana Bhat, former UoM Syndicate Member Sahana Shivappa, UoM Department of Physical Education Director Dr. P. Krishnaiah and others were present at the event.
