Even as the District Office of Jagatika Lingayat Mahasabha was inaugurated, members of Veerashaiva Lingayat Jagruti Vedike staged a demonstration opposing the move.
The Jagruti Vedike members tried to enter Hosamutt premises, but were prevented by the Police at the gate itself. The Vedike members then raised slogans opposing the inauguration of the unit. Soon, Jagatika Lingayat Mahasabha members too raised slogans demanding separate religion status for Lingayats, when tension and confusion prevailed at the venue for sometime. The Police then held more than 12 members of Veerashaiva-Lingayat Jagruti Vedike and brought them to CAR Grounds from where they were let off after sometime.
Reacting to the protest, Ravandur Murugha Mutt Seer Mokshapathi Swamiji said that there will always be opposition wherever a good work is launched.
Maintaining that everyone cannot be changed, the Seer claimed that Lingayat Dharma was a casteless society and anyone willing to adhere to the principles of Basavanna are welcome to join.
