Vehicle parking menace near Zoo: Whither Traffic Police?

July 7, 2023

Sir,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the persisting traffic and vehicle parking problems in the vicinity of the Mysuru Zoo, particularly in the Ittigegud area. Despite numerous complaints made by residents, including through this Star of Mysore column, it is disheartening to note that no substantial changes have been observed thus far.

One issue that deserves immediate attention is the presence of an illegal auto stand at the exit of the Zoo Subway. It is alarming that no action has been taken by our Traffic Police Department despite this matter being brought to their attention. The unchecked presence of the auto stand only exacerbates the traffic congestion in the area.

Furthermore, the parking facilities offered by a nearby hotel have become a persistent problem for the residents. This establishment allows four-wheelers to park indiscriminately, obstructing the view of pedestrians attempting to cross the road.

It is sad to witness the complete disregard shown by the restaurant owner towards the ‘no parking’ sign displayed at the corner. Even more concerning is the apparent indifference of the Traffic Policemen stationed in the area, who can often be seen casually enjoying their tea, coffee and breakfast without addressing the chaos caused by illegal parking.

To mitigate these issues, I urge the authorities to implement a ban on serving food inside cars on roads with heavy traffic congestion. Additionally, I believe it is essential for the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) to install permanent barricades or poles at all corners of the Zoo parking ground, preventing vehicles from parking there and promoting a more pedestrian-friendly environment.

The presence of various cafes, tea stalls and ice-cream parlours on 4th Cross Road only adds to the existing problem. It raises questions as to how the MCC has granted permission for these food establishments to operate within the narrow streets of Ittigegud.

On behalf of the residents of Ittigegud, I appeal to the City Police Commissioner to take strict action against those violating traffic norms by indiscriminately parking their vehicles. Furthermore, I kindly request the Police officers on duty to carry out their responsibilities diligently and not overlook these pressing issues.

It is high time that these matters are addressed to ensure the safety, convenience and overall well-being of the residents and visitors in Ittigegud.
