Vintage Vignettes… from a Princely State

March 23, 2026

By R.G. Singh, Secretary, Ramsons Kala Pratishtana

Majority of the photographs of H.H. Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV shot at official functions across Mysore State (outside the Palace premises) shows the Maharaja dressed in white trousers, a comfortable close-collar coat and a ready-to-wear turban. However, at celebrations and events within the Palace, he is seen in resplendent silks,  jewellery and a grand turban.

This 1939 photograph is from the grand birthday celebrations of the Maharaja. He is being escorted out of the Darbar Hall as soon as he descended from the silver throne. The Yuvaraja H.H. Kanteerava Narasimharaja Wadiyar and Prince Jayachamaraja Wadiyar follow him; right behind him are two staff bearers carrying ornamental fly-whisks (chauri). The smartly attired Mysore State officers offer him a salute as he walks past them. Later, the Maharaja and his entourage went around the city in their Silver Ghost to accept greetings from their subjects.

It was at the ruling King’s birthday, that the various honours to eminent citizens, distinguished officers and able administrators were conferred including four separate classes of the Order of the Gandabherunda (established 1892).
