Warner blitz overshadows Samson’s ton as Sunrisers win over Rajasthan

March 30, 2019

An enterprising knock by David Warner (69 off 37 balls), helped Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), to chase the target of 199 set by Rajasthan Royals (RR), in the IPL tie played at Hyderabad on Friday.

Warner’s knock overshadowed Sanju Samson’s century and Sunrisers coasted to a five-wicket win (201 for five in 19 overs).

With this, the visitors registered their first win in the IPL 2019, while Rajasthan Royals suffered a second successive defeat as they lost their first match to Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by 14 runs.

While chasing a 199 target, Sunrisers got off to a good start as the opening pair played handsomely and took their team towards victory.

When the Sunrisers were at 110 runs they lost Warner. The explosive Australian departed for 69 runs and with this wicket 110-runs opening-wicket partnership were broken.

Soon, after that Jonny Bairstow (45 runs off 28 balls) also departed following which Sunriser’s run rate also came down. Dhawal Kulkarni took a spectacular catch to dismiss Bairstow. He left the Sunrisers at 117/2 in 11 overs.

Kane Williamson took the charge after Warner dismissal but soon departed on a score of 14 runs of 10 balls. However, Vijay Shankar played few shots and scored 35 runs 15 balls, but the struggle  continued.

Unbeaten Rashid Khan (15 runs off 8 balls) and Yusuf Pathan (16 runs off 12 balls) played cautiously and eventually Rashid scored the winning six as Hyderabad chased down the tough 199-run target with an over to spare.

For Rajasthan, Shreyas Gopal took three wickets while Ben Stokes and Jaydev Unadkat took one wicket each.

Earlier, Ajinkya Rahane (70 runs off 49 balls) and Sanju Samson unbeaten (102 runs off 55 balls) powered Rajasthan Royals to post 198/2 against Hyderabad.

Though Rashid Khan gave an early break through by dismissing Jos Buttler for 5 runs, who became the first cricketer in the IPL to be ‘mankaded’, Hyderabad couldn’t stop Rajasthan Royals from posting a big total. Royals were 15/1 in 3.2 overs.

The Hyderabad bowling was excellent to start off with. They hardly gave anything away in the Powerplay. However, they failed to stop runs as the two batsmen Rahane and Samson played handsomely.

It was Nadeem’s first over which started the run flow and then it never stopped. They targeted the inexperience of the left-arm spinner and Sandeep Sharma.

They tackled Rashid well in the middle overs and in the end. Royals batsmen snatched 58 runs in the last three overs.

Rashid Khan was adjudged as the Man of the Match.
