Where and how to park vehicles?

January 1, 2021

Sir,

Haphazard parking of vehicles, especially two-wheelers and four-wheelers, on city roads and in Highways has become a nuisance. It looks like vehicle users either do not have knowledge about the basic parking rules or do not want to follow it.

We should not park vehicles in bus bays, close to bus stops, road corners, near intersections or roundabout, and on the footpaths. In two-way roads, vehicles need to be parked only on the left side in the direction of the traffic flow. Vehicles always be parked close to the curb of the footpath or edge of the road.

Secondary parking (parking beside or behind an already parked vehicle) is banned as it becomes impossible to take out an already parked vehicle.

While parking at nights, parking as far as possible in a lighted area is advisable and where there are no street lights, switching on the parking lights helps to know about the parked vehicle on the road. Vehicles should be parked on the road in such a way that it will not obstruct the movement of the other vehicles on the road.

Vehicles in any way should not be parked on the wrong side of the road, as it obstructs the movement of other vehicles while parking and taking out from the parking area. Vehicles in no case should be parked in ‘no parking areas’ or prohibited zones. Wherever service roads are available, it is preferred to park in the service roads rather than parking on the main road or Highways.

In case of an emergency or breakdown, parking lights should be switched on or barricading with tree branches or indicator boards are to be kept to indicate other road users about this.

Whether it is at crossroads or interior roads, vehicles should never be stopped or parked on pedestrian crossings. We should not park our vehicles in front of the entrance gates of residences, commercial establishments, or public buildings or places.

Finally, parking of four-wheelers in a two-wheeler parking slot or vice-versa attracts penalty, therefore, to be avoided and public cooperation is necessary to have smooth flow of traffic on the roads.
