Woman ends life over alleged dowry harassment

June 5, 2022

Bettadapura: A woman, depressed over frequent harassment for dowry by her husband and his family members, committed suicide by consuming poison. The incident took place on June 1 at Kittur Doddegowdanakoppal village.

The deceased is Shwetha (23), wife of Basavaraju alias Pradeep of the village. A native of Kellur village, Shwetha was given in marriage to Pradeep, son of Sarojamma and Chikkegowda couple of Kittur Doddegowdanakoppal village two years ago.

According to the complaint lodged by Lokesh, father of Shwetha with Bettadapura Police, Pradeep along with his mother Sarojamma began harassing her for dowry since the day she got married and depressed over this, Shwetha had attempted to commit suicide by jumping into a canal but was saved by villagers. Later, village elders had advised Pradeep and Shwetha to lead a happy life.

Lokesh has further stated in the complaint that even after his daughter Shwetha got pregnant, Pradeep, Sarojamma and Pradeep’s sister Latha did not stop harassing her and had also confined her in their house without sending her to her parents’ house.

Depressed over this, Shwetha, on June 1, consumed poison in a bid to end her life and was rushed to K.R. Hospital in Mysuru where she breathed her last on Friday, the complaint added.

Shwetha leaves behind her son. Bettadapura Police, who have registered a case against Pradeep, Sarojamma and Latha, are investigating.
