Mysore/Mysuru: An elderly woman, who gave the details of debit and credit cards while booking a hotel room through online has lost Rs. 4,99,242.
The woman, who lost her money is 67-year-old Latha (name changed), a resident of Saraswathipuram in city.
Latha, who wanted to go to Tirupathi, was searching for a hotel on Google to book room when the name of Courtyard Marriott Hotel with phone number popped up. She then called the phone number and the person, who received her call advised her to book the room using her debit or credit card. Latha then gave her debit card details and the person on the other end of the phone told her that Rs. 5,250 would be debited from her bank account.
Latha has stated in her complaint that Rs. 46,386 was debited from her Canara Bank account using her debit card details.
When the excess amount was not refunded, Latha warned the hotel staff that she would lodge a Police complaint during which the staff told her that financial transactions can be done only through USD and asked her to provide information about any international card.
Latha then provided the details of her son’s debit and credit cards without bringing it to her son’s knowledge.
Within minutes a total of Rs. 4,99,242 including Rs. 2,99,507 from her son’s credit card, Rs. 1,15,201 from his debit card and Rs. 38,148 from Latha’s debit card were withdrawn.
Based on the complaint from Latha, Saraswathipuram Police who have registered a case are investigating.
