Mysuru:  Strongly condemning increasing atrocities and violence against women, Karnataka State Women’s Commission Chairperson K.G. Nagalakshmi Bai has urged women folk to resist any atrocities and injustice with unity.

She was speaking after inaugurating ‘Janapada Siri’, a folk event organised by Women and Child Dasara Sub-Committee as part of Dasara festivities at J.K. Grounds here this morning. Pointing out that folklore is an integral part of our culture, she urged the authorities to take appropriate measures for promoting folk arts.

District Minister G.T. Devegowda said that women have played a vital role in retaining our rich heritage, art and culture for centuries. Observing that women who hold key positions in Government and other sectors should work towards a sustainable women empowerment, he opined that it was important for women to learn karate for self-defence.

A total of 14 women folk teams from 7 taluks of the district are taking part in this event. Women and Child Welfare Deputy Director K. Radha and other officials were present.

Molestation complaints

Nagalakshmi Bai, replying to a query on alleged molestation of a few women during the Open Street Festival held on Saturday, said that she came to know about allegations of molestation and misbehaviour during the festival on Krishnaraja Boulevard that are doing the rounds in social media circles.

She will seek information from the concerned Police authorities on the issue and the Commission will take suo moto action if reports in social media were found to be true.
