Mysore/Mysuru: Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterised by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication. World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD), observed on April 2 every year, aims to put a spotlight on the hurdles that people with autism and others living with autism face every day.

In an attempt to create awareness on this malady, District Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DDRC), under the aegis of Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and Senior Citizens, had organised a webinar recently at the centre premises.

Speaking after inaugurating the programme, Women and Child Development Department Deputy Director K. Padma said, “Autism is a problem that affects a child’s growth and development. A child with ASD often has problems communicating. He or she may have trouble developing social skills. Symptoms often first appear before three years of age. We need to create awareness in parents with autistic children.”

Resource person Dr. Dharmashekhar Patil said, “Since 1990, research has been going on about this disorder in America, Australia and European countries. Different types of treatment strategies are being adopted, but unfortunately none of them are providing complete cure.” At the end of webinar, Dr. Dharmashekhar Patil interacted with parents of affected children and responded to their queries.

Later, addressing the participants, Clinical Psychologist of District Disability Rehabilitation Centre M. Neelamani said, “Since 2011-12, Indian Red Cross Society has been monitoring and distributing kits to specially-abled persons. Till date, a total of 126 autistic persons have been registered at the centre. 68 autistic children are getting daily life skills training.”

DDRC Nodal Officer H.R. Arjun, District Disabled Welfare officer R. Malini and  Member-Secretary Prof. Mahadevappa participated in the programme.
