World Elephant Day observed at Zoo

August 13, 2019

Mysuru: Marking World Elephant Day, an awareness programme on protection of elephants was organised at the Mysuru Zoo premises here yesterday.

Informative posters educating people on the behaviour, food habits, daily routine and awareness posters on protecting elephants and human-animal conflict were displayed near the elephant enclosure which were being keenly gone through by the visitors to the Zoo.

Zoo Education Officer Guruprasad explained the intrinsic features of elephants and deciphered the pictorial posters to curious students.

Speaking on the occasion, Zoo Executive Director Ajit M. Kulkarni said that elephant is the biggest terrestrial animal which is also a herbivore and added that two species exist namely African and Asiatic elephants.

Speaking on protection of elephants, Kulkarni regretted that human greed over ivory was responsible to killing elephants.

He added that installing illegal electrified fence to protect land was also electrocuting the elephants which should be given a thought to arrest unethical practices.
