Mysore/Mysuru: Daksha College, Mysuru, celebrated World Health Day on Apr.21 in the presence of distinguished personalities from various fields, who shared valuable insights on health and wellness.
Activities included voluntary blood donation, general health check-up, eye screening and awareness on health benefits of millets.
N. Swamy Raju, retired teacher and rural social activist, who inaugurated the event, emphasised the importance of consuming essential nutrients for the body rather than just eating for taste.
Chief guest Dr. Khadar Valli, Padma Shri awardee and the renowned ‘Millet Man of India’ spoke on the importance of incorporating millets into one’s diet to combat lifestyle diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. He also spoke about the effects of excessive glucose on heart, cautioning against consumption of rice, wheat and similar foods.
He stressed that glucose, though vital, should be consumed in moderation along with other nutrients, as excessive glucose intake can strain the heart by thickening the blood.
Emphasising the importance of consuming balanced meals with adequate glucose content, Dr. Khadar advocated for incorporating a variety of millets into the diet, stating that their high fibre content aids digestion and promotes overall health.
Dr. Priyanka Raju, a young doctor, spoke on preventive healthcare measures and the importance of regular health check-ups.
Anitha Raju, Vice-Chairperson of Global Education Trust, urged young people to adopt traditional dietary practices to improve their health.
P. Jayachandra Raju, Trust Chairman, lauded Dr. Khadar and announced plans to introduce millet-based meals in College canteens to promote healthier eating habits among students.
