World Water Day, Women’s Day celebrated

Mysuru: Senior Civil Judge and Member-Secretary of District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) B.P. Devamane, highlighting the importance of water and planting sapling, said that the community participation in protection of environment is very important.

He was speaking after inaugurating the “Legal Awareness Support” programme organised by the Department of Social Work, Pooja Bhagavath Memorial Mahajana Education Centre, in association with DLSA and Mysuru Bar Association in commemoration of World Water Day and International Women’s Day, at its premises recently.

He also spoke about the laws meant for women who are in  distress and the role of DLSA to protect women’s interest by providing free legal aid and  promote their worth and dignity.

Deputy Conservator Forests (DCF), Mysuru Division, Dr. K. C. Prashant Kumar explained about the theme for World Water Day 2019 as ‘Leaving No One Behind.’ This is an adaptation of the central promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as sustainable development progresses, everyone must benefit.

Speaking at length about the problems of water scarcity in a country like India, he said there were several programmes and schemes to improve and protect the water bodies to revive water bodies in Karnataka;  there was also a need for protective measures to save water as well as saving the sources of water in the forest. He further explained about inseparable relationship between forest and human beings as the supply of water source.

Dr. Prashant Kumar gave the example of Rajendra Singh, the Water Man of India and about Tharun Bharth Sangha and the way they worked for conserving water. He urged youths to take active role to protect environment and create an awareness of optimum utilisation of water.

Advocate N. Sundar Raj, briefed about “Property Rights of Women” and highlighted about a woman whether she is a daughter or a wife or a mother, deserves to get equal rights as her male counterpart. She should be treated with same respect and love as anyone else.

Most of the women in India give up their careers and spend their life as home-makers. Thus, it is not only necessary but a responsibility to make sure that they do not suffer financially, physically or emotionally in case of any tragedy, he said.

It is essential to safeguard Property Rights of Women to secure their life. She deserves equal share as her brother in the property of her parents and as her husband in the property of her in-laws, he added.

Bar Association President S. Anand Kumar spoke about the necessity of organising the programme and the significance of commemorating and celebrating  World Water Day and International Women’s Day.

Mahajana Education Society Hon. Secretary Dr. Vijayalakshmi Muralidhar, delivering the  presidential address, spoke about simple solutions to save water and the importance of knowing law in modern world.

Pooja Bhagavath Memorial Mahajana Education Centre, Director Dr. C.K. Renukarya welcomed. Head of the Department of Social Work Dr. Suman K. Murty proposed a vote of thanks. D. Premajyothi, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, compered.

Students of Department of Computer Science U.M. Preethi and Poorna Sri sang the State Anthem in the beginning of the programme. Department of Social Work Assistant Professors Indushekar, V. Bhavana and PG Centre Department Heads, faculties and students were present.
