Yoga Day: City looks to break its own record

Mysuru: Mysuru that is emerging as the Yoga Capital of the country is preparing for the 5th edition of International Day of Yoga on June 21st  to break its own two world records by performing yoga at one particular location this year.

The city found a place in the Guinness Book of World Records, in the largest yoga lesson category. With 55,506 participants, Mysuru officially entered the record book for the largest gathering at a single venue on June 21, 2017.

Today, hundreds of Yoga enthusiasts took part on the first day of International Yoga Day Rehearsal organised by Yoga Federation of Mysuru (YFM) at Sougandhika Park in Kuvempunagar. They performed yoga from 6.30 am to 7.30 am. The YFM has planned to hold similar rehearsals at five different places including Race Course and Mysore Palace.             

Yoga University  

Inaugurating the event, former Minister and MLA S.A. Ramdas assured that he will strive to get sanctions for a Yoga University. Such a University will help train thousands of yoga teachers who can then go to other parts of the country to create a healthy society.

GSS Yogic Foundation’s D. Srihari said that city was making all preparations to enter the Guinness record by inviting 1.50 lakh people to perform yoga at Race Course this year. To achieve this, the YFM has sought the help of all yoga training schools, District Administration and Suttur Seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji who will lead the International Yoga Day in Mysuru this year.

YFM has also deputed more than 1,100 yoga trainers to visit the every house, private firms, and educational institutions to provide wide publicity. He said, multi-religious and spiritual leaders will be invited and the city will drive home the message of harmony and peace, he added.

Srihari also remembered the contributions of the then Deputy Commissioner of Mysuru D. Randeep for the city to enter the world record in 2017.

This year’s event will be the biggest public gathering at one place after the Dasara procession. Efforts are on to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take part, he added.

He also said that YFM has also planned to celebrate World Environment Day which will be celebrated on June 5 by planting 50,000 saplings. SPYSS Yoga Samsthe Chief Nagabhushan, Corporator Ramesh Kumar, District National Service Scheme (NSS) Coordinator Chandrashekhar and others were present.
