Mysuru: Observing that the protracted delay in completing the admission process at pre-matriculation and post-matriculation hostels in the city had made SC/ST students in the taluk wary of coming to Mysuru for studies, ZP Members at the ZP General Meeting here recently, urged the Government to change the admission process in hostels.
ZP Member Beerihundi Basavanna, who had raised the issue at a review meeting held recently, wanted the State Government to modify the existing system, that was not friendly to the students.
Maintaining that students from the rural pockets of Mysuru were facing a lot of hurdles, Basavanna stressed on the need for changing the system.
Prabha, Project Co-ordinator for Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP), pointed to the contradictions in the two orders issued by the Government — one in 2013 and the other in September 2018 — for the difficulties in gaining admission to the hostels.
Noting that while the 2013 order said that all students who apply for admission must be admitted in hostels, a subsequent order issued in Sept. 2018 directed not to have students more than the maximum capacity.
Later, ZP President Parimala Shyam and CEO K. Jyothi issued instructions to Social Welfare Department Officials to ensure that at least 70 percent of the applicants were provided accommodation in SC/ST Hostels in the city.
The ZP CEO warned the officials of action if they failed to ensure supply of pure drinking water to anganwadis, schools, hostels and hospitals.
Pointing out that there were complaints of poor quality of food being supplied to some anganwadis, K. Jyothi warned of stringent actions against suppliers if they failed to maintain quality.
She further said that the respective Gram Panchayat staff will be held responsible for any failure in providing drinking water to anganwadis.
