Mysore/Mysuru:  Akash, aged 17 years, is a minor cadaver donor and the youngest so far as per the records at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru.

He was brought to Apollo on Feb. 25 from Cauvery Hospital after he suffered a serious head injury due to Road Traffic Accident near Rajkumar Road.

The initial CT scan showed a brain stem infarct and he was shifted to ICU immediately for life support and intensive care.

Akash was kept on life support as he was in a very critical state. On Feb.28, his condition worsened and at 11.30 pm he was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure as per the hospital protocol stipulated by the Transplant of Human Organs Act 1994 by panellist doctors at Apollo BGS Hospitals.

Akash was healthy before this incident and further tests confirmed his eligibility for organ donation. His family was counselled for organ donation as per the defined protocol and the teenager’s parents came forward to donate his organs.

As per organ donation protocol, officials from SOTTO (State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation, formerly Jeeva Sarthakathe) initiated the process by the organ recipients’ waiting list.  On Mar. 1, Akash’s Organs (Liver, 2 Kidneys, Heart Valves and Corneas) were harvested with a cross-clamp done at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru. The organs donated and recipient Hospitals are as follows:

Liver – Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru; Left Kidney – Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru; Right Kidney – Clearmedi Radiant Hospital, Mysuru; Heart Valves – NH Hospital, Bengaluru and Corneas – K.R. Hospital, Mysuru.
