2019 Lok Sabha Polls: Pramoda Devi Wadiyar to contest on BJP ticket?

February 25, 2018

Bengaluru:  Although the Lok Sabha polls is more than a year away, speculations are gaining ground whether the Royal family member Pramoda Devi Wadiyar will join politics.

Taking a cue from the speculations, the BJP is said to have started attempts to lure Pramoda Devi into the party fold and field her as the party candidate from Mysuru-Kodagu constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

But Pramoda Devi herself has not shown any interest on entering politics right now. This is not the first time that the BJP has made such an attempt. The party had planned to field her from Mysuru-Kodagu Lok Sabha seat in the 2014 polls itself, as the party had no strong candidate then.

The then State BJP Chief Prahlad Joshi and some other State leaders had made a few attempts to convince Pramoda Devi to contest. But Pramoda Devi did not show any interest in politics then, as she was in grief over the demise of her husband Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar in Dec. 2013.

But the BJP leaders who are hoping that Pramoda Devi will take a call on entering politics this time, have renewed their efforts to bring her into the party fold.

The BJP leaders believe that the BJP is the best choice for her, as she has tactical differences with Chief Minister Siddharamaiah who heads the Congress Government and the JD(S) has little significance at the   National level.

Reacting to reports in a section of the press on speculations of her joining politics, Pramoda Devi, when contacted by SOM, categorically said that her stand on not entering politics remains unchanged as politics is not her cup of tea. She further said that many political parties including the BJP had approached her in the past. She had always maintained that she doesn’t want to be a part of any political party, she added.
