‘275 female foetuses killed, numbers may go up’

December 1, 2023

Mysore/Mysuru: Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundurao said “275 female foetuses have been aborted by those involved in the racket and possibilities of increase in numbers of these cases cannot be ruled out.”

Sharing details regarding preliminary investigation into the racket, after chairing a meeting of Officers in city last evening, the Minister said “It is not possible to say since how many years the female foeticide racket was active, but there is no doubt over the extent of the illegal activity which spans boundary.”

The investigation into the case assumes significance as female foeticide is considered as a social malaise that has to be weeded out. It is also the main reason behind falling female ratio against male, widening the gender gap further. Apart from those aborting the foetus, the women who consent for abortion also have to face punitive action. There is a need to strengthen law further. On the other hand awareness will also be created among women, he added.

Those arrested in the case are quacks with ChandanBallal the prime accused in the case not having any MBBS certificate. The investigation is also being conducted into the involvement of several others and discussions are on to ensure those proven guilty will be punished by the Court, added Minister Dinesh Gundurao.
