40 kmph & over-speeding !

August 27, 2021

Sir,

Anything above 40 kmph on our Highways is now considered over-speeding. We can see interceptors hiding on the Highways and the Ring Road to catch motorists going over 40 kmph.

There was a time when maximum speed limit was 60 kmph which was reasonable. Now it has been reduced to 40 kmph. So we have to travel at 40 kmph on our Ring Roads and our Highways or else pay Rs. 1,000 fine for each time we “over-speed.”

I don’t understand why the speed limit has been reduced to 40 kmph. Wasn’t the traffic fine target not being met when it was at 60 kmph? It is 2021, all our vehicles are modern and have superior handling and braking. It is possible to have excellent control of vehicle even when travelling at 60 kmph. Keeping the speed limit at 40 kmph, that too on Highways is ridiculous. It kills the whole purpose of building Highways. How can we do long-distance journeys at this speed?

And is this speed limit only for the general public? Because I have seen State transport buses and Government vehicles flying on the Highways where there is a 40 kmph speed limit.

Over-speeding is dangerous, I admit. But keeping the speed limit to 40 kmph is way too low. It looks like this has been done only as a way to increase fine collection than keep a steady pace of traffic. I request the authorities concerned to bring back the old speed limits which were reasonable.
